Despite winning 4 major titles in 2021 and pocketing and eye-watering £405,000 on the professional dart circuit this year, Jonny Clayton insists he won’t give up on his original job as a plasterer. Inspiring ain’t it?! The man they call ‘The Ferret’ has had nothing short of a stellar 2021 after taking out the Masters, Premier League, World Grand Prix and World Series final and is a red-hot favourite to win the William Hill PDC World Championship. But despite all of Clayton’s successs on the dart board, the part-time spread for Carmarthenshire Country council believes it’s important to ‘keep his options open’ for the future in case he falls out of love with the game. Speaking to The Daily Star, Clayton, 47, said “I came out of school at 16, had an apprenticeship as a plasterer straightaway, and I’ve never been out of work.” Jonny Clayton refusing to give up job as plasterer despite £400k darts earnings in 2021 https://t.co/z40YmfFASQ pic.twitter.com/0qUSA06kta “I enjoy going to work, it’s the banter with the guys, it takes your mind completely off darts... and that’s the secret.” “I’m afraid to take that step of one minute it’s eight hours a day and banter, and then nothing. I don’t think it would benefit me doing nothing. If the formula works, I don’t want to change things.” “Phil Taylor used to say he practised eight hours a day. I can promise you I will not practise eight hours a day.” “I do have a dartboard at home, but the kids throw at it more than me!” “I genuinely don’t know what I will do with my job. I am also afraid I will fall out of love with the game.” (H/T Daily Star)
