A builder from Sheffield was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison after he was involved in a violent plot to use intimidation and violence to receive £2,500 in wages owed to him and others - that resulted in an accountant being shot in the leg with a sawn-off shotgun. Details released in Sheffield Crown Court explained the series of events that led to the incident and are perhaps more commonly seen in a Quinton Tarantino film. Carl Phillips, 28, was one of five men who confronted a building boss as he was leaving a building site with the intent on recovering claimed money owed to them. Threatening violence, the five men convinced the boss and his accountant to meet them in a reservoir where they would hand over the £2,500. It was during the handover that the accountant who was accompanying the boss was shot in the leg, fracturing his fibula and blacking out before being taken to hospital. As reported by Yorkshire Live, Judge David Dixon described Phillips’s actions as “wicked, disgraceful violence” before sending him to prison for 12 years and 9 months. He said: “The complainant was accosted by five men behaving in a threatening way and demanding money. It is in effect blackmail by a different name. That is serious. “The clear intention throughout was to cause injury and pain and show you weren’t to be messed with.” Phillips, of Wesley Avenue, Aston, Sheffield, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm. As for the other members of the five who were involved but did not use a firearm, one received a 9-month term suspended for 18 months and a compulsory 180 hours of unpaid work to be completed. Another was ordered to serve 20 days of rehabilitation activities. (H/T Yorkshire Live) Feature Image Credit SYP
