Owner of Imperium Group and fellow electrician Bradley Jones appeared alongside Thomas Nagy on The Electrical Show this week to discuss the perils and the pitfalls of starting your own contracting business. Over the course of the show, the pair swapped advice on building your client list, learning from your mistakes, and keeping your costs low in the first 12 months. One of the biggest challenges facing many fledgling businesses is building up the customer base. For most that means cold calling clients and asking if they are looking for an electrician. “When you first start out, one of the first things that you can do is get on the phone,” said Jones. “Start making phone calls to local businesses that you want to work with. Just try and get yourself out there because that doesn’t cost anything,” he added. Nagy agreed: “You can’t just expect the phone to ring – I think that is probably the biggest piece of advice. Even if the phone is ringing off the hook, we live in a turbulent world and that phone can stop ringing as quickly as it starts.” In June, the pair discussed the ‘day one’ challenges of setting up a contracting business.
