Thomas Nagy and Paul Meenan catch up with new build snagger and YouTuber John Cooper

Posted: Thursday, February 8th, 2024

YouTuber and cofounder of New Home Quality Control John Cooper has a chat with Thomas Nagy and Paul on the poor quality of new builds and workmanship issues.

John got into 'snagging' after being "sick to death" by the poor quality of homes developers release. Together with his team, John inspects 350 to 400 houses a month across the country. Just 3% of the homes inspected are passable. (3%!!!!!!)

"It's not always the developers' fault. I put the blame squarely on the tradesmen, and whichever developments they work on will have the snags. The site manager plays a key role in ensuring the properties are built to standard," he informs.

Electrical snags are not as common as carpentry defects in the new builds inspected by John and his team. "It's petty electrical defects we come across such as sockets not being levelled, and metre boxes not fixed to the wall."

He also shares some of the worst snags they've come across including missing fire barriers around properties. "We see a lot of things that have the potential to be a disaster."

He concludes that lack of training and the speed of build is the main cause of defects in new builds.
