Roofer Gary McIntyre shares his near-death experience

Posted: Monday, November 4th, 2024

Highland roofer known for his original rooftop artwork Gary McIntyre had a near-death experience after contracting a bacterial infection that saw him in a coma for nine days.

Gary joins Danny Madden on The Roofing Show to share his dramatic story of needing extensive time off the tools to recover.

"It's very rare to contract epiglottitis," he begins, "I ended up in intensive care for 14 days, nine of which I was in a coma."

Gary felt ill on a Friday, and on Sunday, he was rushed to the hospital as his throat "closed up" on him. He also fell into a state of delirium during his time in the hospital.

After spending a fortnight in the hospital, Gary's road to recovery was 30 days long. "I was barely able to walk after coming out of the coma. I'd lost a lot of weight, and mentally, I was decimated."

He explained the challenge of taking so much time off as a self-employed roofer and how it impacted him as the family provider.

Gary also mentions the changes he's made to his diet and lifestyle: "I've quit smoking and drinking energy drinks. I've also switched to decaf coffee. I've also begun eating breakfast daily, something I hadn't done in years. I eat a lot more cooked meals instead of takeaways and pizzas."
