On today's episode of The Carpentry Show, Robin Clevett, Clive Holland, and Jack Auletta shed light on the black economy undermining the construction sector and its damaging effects on the tradespeople. Fix Radio host Clive Holland says: "When good builders and tradespeople bend the rules a little bit, it's known as grey. Once the rules are bent, you're then pushing yourself into the black to cut corners. "The black economy has grown dramatically over the years. It's not just the builders at fault, it's the clients too. They are accepting these low prices and cash in hand, which is ruining it all for us." The black economy gives rise to fake tradespeople endangering lives and giving a bad name to all tradespersons, Clive adds. Carpenter and builder Jack Auletta believes there are many tradespeople who take cash in hand or work off the books entirely. "As a business owner, I don't deal with any subcontractors who want to paid in cash." He argues that the tradespeople who carry out unregulated work are causing massive harm to the reputation of the industry. The only way to tackle this epidemic, he says, is to "be more registered" and get more regulations into the industry.
