Fix Radio’s own Robin Clevett, host of The Carpentry Show, made an appearance on BBC News last week to discuss the ongoing skills crisis in the construction sector. Despite a dropping number of vacancies and unemployment climbing, the industry remains gripped by a shortage of skilled workers. The CITB’s most recent Construction Skills Network Report, published at the start of the year estimated that the construction sector needed another 225,000 by 2027. The Trade Skills Index published last month calculated the skills gap to be even wider. According to the market survey, the sector needs nearly another 1 million skilled workers in the next ten years. Speaking with BBC, Robin said, “Everyone needs trades – they need people to do insulation work. They need people to do new builds, replace cladding. There’s so much work but there’s not enough labour to go around, so that’s what has driven this massive demand and adverts for all kinds of trades.” Robin appeared on primetime BBC News and was quoted on the corporation’s website.
