Robin Clevett returns the subject of the black economy once again and how it undermines the carpentry sector. He is joined by Geoff Rhodes, president of the Institute of Carpenters (IOC). "It's not just illegal due to tax evasion, but a whole host of other reasons such as record keeping [and] health and safety," says Robin. Geoff adds: "My advice for tradespeople is to be professional in everything we do. If you want a professional job done, expect to pay for things correctly. The rules of the game are that a customer needs to pay, the tradesmen need to record their VAT, and the whole transaction is transparent and professional." He believes that carpenters can protect their reputation from the black economy by becoming a member of the IOC. "Being visible with that badge and the accountability of being a professional in the trade helps rise above the lower echelon of our industry." Losses incurred by tax evasion in the construction industry is around £4 billion a year, Geoff reckons. Listen to the podcast here.
