More than 170 construction workplaces across the UK are getting ready to open their doors to the public – as the industry strives to recruit 50,000 workers a year to meet demand. Booking is now open for Open Doors 2025, which will see construction organisations across the country host pre-booked tours of their sites and other workplaces between 17 and 22 March to inspire young people and those seeking a change of career to choose construction. Major project tours, which visitors can book their place on, include the expansion of the North Stand at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, the creation of a new Central African Rainforest at Bristol Zoo, and the redevelopment of a 10-floor Children’s Cancer Centre at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. Other projects that will take visitors behind the site hoardings include the £220 million refurbishment of the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, the construction of the new multi-million-pound Culture House in Sunderland, and the development of the five-storey Hamilton Dock Hotel within the Titanic Quarter in Belfast. Open Doors is delivered by Build UK, with support from a range of partners, including the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and CSCS. Each Open Doors event generally involves a site tour and a Q&A session with construction professionals, with some, like the National Construction Colleges, also offering practical demonstrations to visitors. Julie White, chair of Build UK, said: “Open Doors brings to life an industry that offers a career for everyone – whether that is on-site or behind the scenes in an office-based role – and never has this type of initiative been more important to help meet the Government’s commitment to ‘Get Britain Building’. “While the tours provide intriguing backdrops to explore the range of roles available, they are also a unique opportunity to talk to construction leaders and apprentices about their route into the industry. “Nearly 90% of the 5,000 visitors that attended an Open Doors event last year said they were more likely to consider a career in construction following their visit, so I’d urge everyone to book an event now and find out just what construction has to offer!”
