New research has revealed that the capital is leading the charge towards a more inclusive skilled trades workforce, with the highest proportion of non-heterosexual workers.

The latest figures reveal that just over one in six of those in the UK’s skilled trade workforce identify as non-heterosexual, with London boasting the most inclusive workforce at 8,843 (2.7%) non-heterosexual workers, while the North East is falling behind with only 1,571 (1.3%).

The experts at money.co.uk’s business insurance dive into government figures to reveal the diversity rate in skilled trades across England and Wales and offer their insights on the benefits of a more inclusive workforce and how businesses can attract diverse talent.

The proportion of straight or heterosexual people in the skilled trades workforce stays somewhat similar across England and Wales, varying by around 7%. The highest proportion is in the North East at 94.30%, and the lowest is London’s 87.34%.

London also has the highest proportion of both gay or lesbian and bisexual skilled tradespeople at 1.12% and 0.92% of the total workforce. The capital also leads the way when it comes to all other sexual orientations at 0.66%, followed by the East of England’s 0.21%.

This variation reflects London’s status as the most culturally and demographically diverse city in the UK, which likely contributes to its higher representation of minority sexual orientations in the trades.

London's inclusive environment may encourage a more diverse range of individuals to enter and remain in the skilled trades.
