Scott Baker from Tidybricks Landscaping in Cardiff and John Ward from JW Construction in Redditch talk about their careers and experiences in the trade with John Roberts, host of The Landscaping Show. Formerly a bricklayer, Baker shares his journey to landscaping. "After leaving school, I did a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) course, which got me working outdoors for £27.30 a week. I did a four-year bricklaying apprenticeship. Eventually, bricklaying took me to Germany where the pay was good. "I switched to landscaping as I got bored of laying bricks. I felt I needed something with more flair where I could put a bit of design into it. The design aspect of landscaping is great," he says. He also adds that being a bricklayer has helped him in his career as a landscaper. Ward also reveals his path to landscaping. "Being homebuilders, we one day came across a situation where a homeowner asked if we could do her garden. My lad Tony took on the job and I could spot the levels as I am a brickie by trade, and he sorted the pavement out. "We then nurtured together. Tony still works for me and we're continuously learning from each other," he explains. Further on the show, the duo discusses mistakes customers make when selecting a contractor, most memorable jobs, taking on more work, retirement, health, and the weather. Listen to the podcast here.
