During the pandemic, the demand for home renovations and new builds skyrocketed. Now, that seems to be easing, especially with the cost-of-living crisis getting worse, Chris Frediani and Bradders learn on The Plastering Show. Plasterer Joel Cooke from Leeds says the demand for his services has been steady. "I do feel like there have been fewer enquiries compared to the last two years. However, I've been booked up until November. When asked about demand in general across Leeds, he says it's been a "rat race" among spreads - with only the "top guys" getting new build projects. British Gypsum-certified scheme member Scott Morgan who lives and works in North Wales feels that the market has “tremendously” slowed down this year. While normally he's booked for up to six months in advance, this year he's been only able to get up to eight weeks of bookings. "A lot of the work here comes from tourism - second homes and the holiday rental market. There seems to be a decline in all sectors here, which means less work for us, plasterers," he says. He also reveals that plasterers have already begun dropping their rates in his area as work is weakening. Sheffield-based plasterer Scott Whitham says that demand has been "pretty steady" in his area. "I'm always prebooked and the phone keeps ringing. I haven't had any days off." He also shares that he has a network of plasterers to rely on if any job drops. Demand hasn't fallen in his locality despite the cost-of-living crisis, he notes.
