Heat pump installers encouraged to adopt apprentices

Posted: Wednesday, July 24th, 2024

The Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship is the UK’s first apprenticeship to train heat pump engineers, HVP Mag reported.

Developed through a partnership between MCS, installers, and the government’s apprenticeship body, IfATE, the apprenticeship was selected in 2023 as one of six 'green apprenticeships' to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

The apprenticeship is now being rolled out nationwide, with 20 training providers offering it to students.

To support apprenticeships and their vital role in building the workforce for the future, the MCS Foundation is offering grants of up to £2,000 to employers who take on apprentices. The grants are available after an apprentice has completed six months of employment.

Applications will be awarded funding on a first come, first served basis until 30 November 2024. The final approval of all grants will take place by December 2024.

Alastair Mumford, programmes director at the MCS Foundation, said: “Hiring an apprentice brings many benefits for businesses, including new skills and improving your local brand.”
