Decorator receives donation after van fire destroys business

Posted: Tuesday, April 1st, 2025

Léon Dominion's van in The Gossamers was broken into in the early hours of February 22, with thieves stealing around £4,000 worth of tools before returning to set the Volkswagen Caddy alight, Watford Observer reported.

He subsequently started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the cost of the tools, with almost £1,500 raised. Now, Crown Decorating Centre in Watford has donated to help him get his business back up and running.

Crown donated £200 worth of painting equipment, while Purdy gifted Léon top-of-the-range brushes, and Hamilton gave him a large bundle including rollers, brushes, and mini rollers.

In total, he received around £700 worth of equipment. Crown Decorating Centre's Jude Makinson is hoping it will help "get him back into business".

"We appreciate the hard work everyone put into supporting Léon, and his reaction was worth it all," said Jude.

It was a very good haul and will help push him in the right direction to get him back on track in business.

Speaking after the blaze, Léon said: "The fire got so hot that the two vehicles on either side were affected badly too, as in both will be written off.

My business went up in smoke, limiting my ability to support my family. All I want to be able to do is what I love: honest day’s graft, painting and decorating to improve people's homes.

A police investigation into the vehicle fire has been closed with no arrests made.

Hertfordshire police said that "all lines of enquiry have been exhausted" following the blaze, but that they would reopen the case if "any new evidence is established".
