Clive Holland, host of The Clive Holland Show, recently turned attention to the mental health crisis in the construction industry, as horrific statistics continue to astonish, as the industry loses two tradespeople every working day in the industry. So, Clive wanted to check in on you and see how you’re doing. He was joined by ex-England International and premier league footballer Trevor Steven for their thoughts as well as Rob, from the Mind Your Head Podcast. Trevor said: “I have been working Causeway Technologies as their mental health ambassador for three years now. And Causeway is a digital technology company and the owner company asked me I wanted to get involved in driving a mental health campaign towards the construction industry. And people listening my be wondering why is an ex-footballer involved in this? We said there just has to be something about football and construction and using football as a way or mechanism of getting people to talk about their mental wellbeing.” A caller Andy the spread in South Tyneside, said: “Great shout again about mental health issues in construction. I've messaged before when you've run similar recognition and explained I've had two full breakdowns previously and had those dark thoughts the first time. I was on meds and received CBT counselling. I'm in a good place but know the black dog can bite me at any time and know the signs now and have some coping skills to help when I feel it creeping up on me. “It's ok not to be ok and we all need a little bit of time for ourselves. So, for anyone out there suffering now, please reach out for help as it is out there and sometimes just talking helps. Please don't suffer in silence.” And Bill from Bill Mitchell Decorators said: “Hello again Mr Holland. My ex-business partner attempted suicide last November. He'd emptied our company accounts to pay off staggering debts. It was a big shock to try to hold everything together. We've just about recovered. Very compassionate start to your show. Well done!” Another Dan, a plasterer Grimsby said: “Great shout on mental health issues. I never used to understand it fully and thought I was bullet proof. Until last year. Therapy helped and for the first time in my life, I understand myself. For anyone struggling right now. Keep going, it can't rain forever. Reach out. Don't let those dark thoughts tell you the lies that no one understands. Give yourself the advice you'd give your best friend.” Another caller from Ludlow Builders opined: “I don't think the problem is with the job, I think it's more the struggle with prices and general cost of living. There are more grumpy trades than ever.” A caller from the Carpentry Shop added: “Wonderful introduction to a very important subject. I have a duty of care to my trainees and that involves spotting changes in personality. “Increasingly over the last 10 years or so, I’ve noticed many are affected by their social media and the stresses to conform to the so-called influencers they follow. What to eat, wear, say etc. I’ve had to help them deal with the fallout.” Rob said: “I started the podcast back in 2020 after going through my own mental health journey. I have worked in the industry for 24 years, having started as an apprentice bricklayer back in 2000.” For the full show, listen here
“As a result, anything to break down that stigma is great and I always tell lads (and lasses) at work that I'm always just a phone call or message away. I also completed a mental health first aid at work course, off my own back in the hope that I can help at least one person after my experiences with it.
