Fix Radio show host Clive Holland appeared on Sky News on Friday to discuss the impact of the cost of living crisis on the building trades. Holland warned that due to rising fuel and energy costs, and record inflation were forcing homeowners to cancel scheduled property improvement work. “Customers are thinking to themselves, ‘hang one a second, I have to pull my belt in - that extension I wanted is now going on hold,’” he said. “A lot of people message my radio programme, saying they are concerned. There has been a drop off of around 30%, with people cancelling work. And that is frightening for them,” added the host of The Clive Holland Show. According to Holland, growing financial pressure could force a lot of small trade business owners and sole traders to come ‘off the tools’ and look for work with larger contractors. “They are going to move from their own business and climb onboard with some of the big players,” he predicted. Holland rounded out his appearance by calling for whoever the next Construction Minister is to actually have some industry experience. “We need that,” he said. It is widely expected a new Construction Minster will be appointed after the current leadership race finishes in early September. The Clive Holland Show runs Monday to Thursday, 12-2pm on Fix Radio, the Builders Station. The weekly podcast drops at 2pm Friday. To listen to the full interview click below.
