The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) has introduced two industry-certified Plumbing Apprenticeship Standards for plumbing and heating apprentices, HVP Mag reported. These new standards, once introduced, will not only create Level 2 and Level 3 career entry points, but also pave the way for a more robust and skilled workforce in the plumbing and heating industry. The launch of the Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard is the result of an extensive education survey conducted by the CIPHE, which gathered feedback from 360 installers, educators, and business owners within the industry. The overwhelming support (89%) for the introduction of a Level 2 apprenticeship and advanced Level 3 apprenticeship is a testament to the thoroughness of our research and consultation process. The Level 2 Standard will allow apprentices to complete an End-Point Assessment covering hot and cold-water installations, sanitation, and rainwater systems. Following the Level 2 standard is Level 3, which introduces further assessment of advanced hot and cold water, low-temperature hot water heating systems, and plumbing/heating systems design. Once qualified, the apprentice may then undertake further training in low-carbon technologies or gas installations. The research was commissioned following discussions by employers and civil servants across government departments who expressed concern about the current education system and limited career openings. Further, there was a marked decline in college enrolments over the last twelve months, suggesting to all parties that urgent action was required to support the needs of apprentices and their employers.
