Checkatrade launches ‘Try a Trade’ after alarming skills gap study

Posted: Thursday, February 8th, 2024

The tradesperson’s platform launched its “Try a Trade” programme to give teachers and career advisers what they need to inspire a new generation to join the sector, RCI Mag reported.

Its recent UK Trade Skills index found that a million tradespeople are expected to leave in the next decade.

Checkatrade has announced the programme during National Apprenticeship Week and is calling on prospective trades to join the industry and help plug its alarming skills gap as a combination of an ageing workforce, fewer EU workers due to Brexit and an increased output needed to help hit retrofit targets has raised demand for young talent.

The organisation also stressed that 244,000 qualified apprentices are needed in the next year alone to keep up with construction demand across the country.

Try a Trade was founded by HomeServe CEO and entrepreneur Richard Harpin in partnership with Checkatrade.

Richard recognises the challenges faced by the UK economy when it comes to finding reliable, skilled tradespeople and is passionate about building a sustainable workforce for the future.
