AUDIO NEWS: Tool theft more than doubles in East Midlands and builders in for a hard time, warns FMB

Posted: Tuesday, November 5th, 2024

Tool theft in the East Midlands has more than doubled in the two years – that’s according to research of local crime statistics.

Police data for Nottinghamshire indicate that tool theft has leapt by over 70% during 2023 and 2024.

Derbyshire saw an even steeper increase, with reported incidents up nearly 170% during the same period.

Craig Sanders, joint managing director with ProTrade, which sponsored the research, warned that Tool theft was becoming a source of mass frustration for tradespeople in the East Midlands.

Smaller builders and tradespeople face challenging times following the release of last week’s Autumn budget, claims the Federation of Master Builders

The hike in National Insurance contributions and Capital Gains Tax increases will “create major headaches,” for builders, said the trade body’s chief executive, Brian Berry.

Berry went on to say: “At a time when SME builders are needing a boost, they may, like many in the country, have to take a hit before they see things get better.”

Local community venues are due to get a decorating makeover, as part of a project to get young people into the trade.

The scheme put together by Teesdale Action Partnership and Trades4Care will give 20 youngsters week-long placements with painters & decorators as they refurbish village halls and public centres in the local area.
