Over 11,200 vans, with an estimated value of £200 million were stolen in the UK last year — that’s according to a report from Direct Line Van Insurance. Less than 40% of stolen vans were recovered by police. Although van thefts dropped in 2024, compared with the previous year, the high number of thefts highlights ongoing security issues with many models and the need for preventive measures. The Ford Transit was the UK’s most targeted model, accounting for more than half of all reported thefts. The Mercedes Sprinter and the Peugeot Boxer were also popular among van thieves. --- A government backed report has warned of an increase in insolvencies without payment reform. The ProjectPay report claims that outdated financial models and banking structures mean that small businesses are unable to access low-cost working capital and can easily find themselves stuck in a high interest, expense debt trap. Unless the government addresses the issue, many building SMEs will not have the liquidity necessary to take advantage of the anticipated building boom. --- Young people have been visiting over 250 building sites across the UK this week, as part of the Open Doors initiative. The programme provides youngsters and those looking to change careers with a behind the scenes glimpse of life in the industry. --- To listen to the construction news please click below
