The number of apprentices joining the construction industry has fallen for the second consecutive year, claims research out last week. Protrade’s 2025 State of Construction Report showed a 1.4% dip in new construction apprentices in 2023/24. The apprentice intake had dropped by 5% in the previous academic year. The report forecasted that by 2030, apprentice intake figures would reach 28,000 a year. The annual apprentice intake rate needs to more than double if the sector is to add the 250,000 skilled workers by the end of the decade, that the CITB claim are needed to sustain growth. --- Construction output increased by 0.5% in the last quarter of 2024, despite a steep fall in December. Government figures show building output was driven solely by a 1.2% increase in new work. The figures also indicated that new orders dropped to their lowest point since the COVID-induced slump in 2020. --- A joiner from County Durham whose house burned down last year, has just had his tools stolen. Adam Walker’s van was broken in to while parked outside a hotel in London. He was due to start a week’s work the following day.
