AUDIO NEWS: Building costs to rise by 17% predicts BCIS and 21-year-old plumber helps save elderly client

Posted: Tuesday, January 21st, 2025

Building costs are expected to rise by 17% over the next five years — that is according to a forecast from the Building Cost Information Services (BCIS).

Tender prices are predicted to rise by 19% over the same period.

For 2025 BCIS predicts that building prices will rise more slowly than input costs, but the trend will reverse next year.

New work output, which has been dropping since mid-2023, is expected to grow to 21% over the forecast period.

Dr David Crosthwaite, chief economist at BCIS said that industry sentiment continued to be positive but noted that since the Autumn budget the market is “less optimistic”.

Construction output grew by 0.4% in November suggest the latest government stats.

The improved figures were driven by an improved performance of private commercial new work and non-housing, repair and maintenance work.

There were also marginal improvements in new work and the repair and maintenance sectors.

A 21-year-old plumber from South West Plumbing has been commended by his boss after going ‘above and beyond’ for an elderly customer.

After arriving to carry out maintenance work, Oakley Hunt realised the homeowner wasn’t well and called 999. He also rushed to a local church to collect a defibrillator ‘just in case’.

In a statement to the local paper, South West Plumbing said “sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference”.
