AUDIO NEWS: UK's local roads branded national embarrassment, and joiner runs 60 miles over 48 hours

Posted: Monday, January 20th, 2025

The state of local roads in England and Wales has been branded a national embarrassment as the bill for fixing them hit £16.3 billion – that’s according to the Asphalt Industry Alliance.

The road maintenance report also claimed that half of the local road network had 15 years or less of structural life remaining.

Currently, local authorities are given over £1 billion a year to maintain the local road network. But a government report found that the Department of Transport doesn’t know how local authorities have spent the money, and nor is it ring-fenced.

Over 170 construction workplaces will throw up their doors in March to inspire more young people and get them into the industry.

Open Doors 2025, which is organised by Build UK and CITB, will take visitors behind the scenes on major projects like the expansion of Manchester City’s stadium and redevelopment of Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Julie White, chair of Build UK said the programme “brings to life an industry that offers careers for everyone.”

Ben Brindley, a joiner, ran 60 miles over 48 hours with a wheelbarrow last week, to raise awareness about mental health issues in the trade.

Brindley told his local paper that people are coming up and talking to him about their mental health while he is out running, “so the message is getting out there, that it’s OK to talk.”
