AUDIO NEWS: Tradespeople reject the idea of shortened apprenticeships and police catch plant thieves

Posted: Friday, March 14th, 2025

Government plans to shorten apprenticeships will fail to prepare learners for the realities of working in the trade – that’s according to research from On the Tools.

The report found that 85% of tradespeople surveyed rejected the idea of reducing minimum apprenticeship time from 12 months down to just eight in certain industries.

Four out of five tradies polled by the online platform also felt that shorter apprenticeships would lead to a drop in the standard in work, and that graduates would be less employable.

Police have arrested nine people in connection with the theft of high value plant equipment.

The suspects were picked up in a series of dawn raids across Lancashire by officers from the National Construction and Agriculture Theft Team, and Ellesmere Port CID.

The gang is thought to be responsible for the theft of around £700,000 worth of plant equipment from suppliers across the UK.

The police believe those involved would hire the equipment using false IDs and then disappear with it.

Josh Padley, the electrician who stepped in to fight lightweight world champion Shakur Stevenson on just four days’ notice, has already lined up his next bout.

Padley, who turned pro since his defeat in Saudi Arabia, will now fight again in Sheffield in mid-April.

The former sparkie with a 15-1 record has signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
