AUDIO NEWS: SME builders want robust retrofitting guidelines and Arnold Schwarzenegger fixes potholes

Posted: Wednesday, July 17th, 2024

The UK's small builders are calling for clear government guidance and robust standards to kickstart the ‘retrofitting’ building revolution, claims research from the Federation of Master Builders.

Brian Berry, chief executive of FMB said a regulatory system to guarantee the competence of builders and ensure minimum standards was vital to unlock market potential and driving demand.

Gavin Killip, a professor with Nottingham Trent University and co-author of the report said that if the country was to meet its climate targets consumer incentives to instil confidence to upgrade homes were necessary.

Nearly a fifth of building service engineers don’t understand the government's overheating regulations – that’s according to research from Zehnder Group.

The survey, which spoke with architects, developers and builders, found that while 46% of respondents claimed to understand the theory behind the Part O building regulations, they were unsure how to put it into practice.

The report also showed that despite the growing risk of overheating, the topic ranked relatively low among the respondents’ list of priorities, with building quality, and energy efficiency ranking above ‘overheating’.

None other than Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken to the streets to help fix America’s pothole problem.

The movie star and former governor of California filmed himself for social media filling a giant pothole in his local area.

However, it later emerged that Arnold had filled in an engineering service trench, and not a pothole.
