AUDIO NEWS: Road workers regularly abused and construction output continues to fall

Posted: Monday, March 17th, 2025

Violent and abusive behaviour towards road workers has become part of the job, claims a report by ITV.

In a survey of more than 250 road workers, one in three said they’d experienced violence, while well over half had been threatened by members of the public.

Nearly all said they were regularly sworn at, with 25% saying they were abused most days.

Unsurprisingly nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they were considering leaving their job due to the abuse they receive.

Construction output continued to fall in January — that’s according to the latest government statistics.

A sharp drop in new private commercial work and a continuing decline in new private housing projects were the biggest contributors to the slowdown.

Overall construction output dipped 0.2%.

The slowdown was partly attributable to poor weather last month, but also highlights ongoing economic uncertainty.

Clive Docwra, managing director of property construction consultancy McBains, said the industry would be concerned to see private commercial new work falling so steeply.

Antony Wade, a painter and decorator from New Farnley has been reducing the environmental impact of his business.

Wade has switched to water-based coatings, uses low pressure spray machines and invented a water filtration system for his paint wastewater, all to reduce his environmental footprint.

He told his local paper; his business and clients had all benefitted from his new eco-friendly approach.
