Starts on private housing projects jumped by 31% in January – that’s according to stats from Glenigan. Project starts in non-residential sectors were slower, increasing just by 2% over the previous three months. The North East of England was the strongest performing region, with project starts up 82% in the last quarter, and up 1% on last year. Allan Wilen, economic director with Glenigan, said the surging mortgage applications in 2024 was a sign consumer confidence was returning to the housing market and that housebuilders were responding to the turnaround in market conditions. --- Tradespeople are calling for tough penalties on tool thieves. Speaking after last week’s go-slow protest in London, to highlight the issue, Mike Thorpe from Stockport, told the BBC, that thieves had left him high and dry after his van was broken into and his tools taken. A spokesperson for the home office said: “We understand the impact that tool theft has on victims who rely on them to earn a living.” --- Toolstation is rolling its rapid delivery service to over 460-stores around the UK following a successful pilot project.
