Plumbers are the most in-demand trade in the UK – that’s according to a study of job ads by Vansdirect. The study claimed plumbers were targeted in 23% of all ‘trade’ job ads in the last year. Sparkies placed second on the list accounting for 19% of all job ads, followed by carpenters. The demand for painters and decorators shot through the roof, with the number of job ads increasing by 175% over the last three months. --- The shortage of teachers for courses in bricklaying, carpentry and plumbing could put a major dent in the government’s plan to build 1.5 homes. Simon Cook, principal at Mid Kent College, told the BBC that demand was there to train up to 2,000 students, but due to budget limitations there was “no way” that he could offer competitive salaries to tradespeople. Cook estimates that bricklayers will make around £20,000 more working on site, then they would in a classroom. --- A plumber in Cornwall has fixed a vandalised beach toilet as a gift to the local community.
