AUDIO NEWS: On the Tools raises awareness to mental health crisis and plasterer meets David Beckham

Posted: Thursday, November 14th, 2024

On the Tools is launching a national campaign to raise awareness to the ongoing mental health crisis in the construction industry.

The online community is positioning 7,000 hardhats across the UK, to represent the number of construction workers lost to suicide over the last decade.

The campaign aims to raise £2.5 million to provide life-saving mental health support to those in the industry.

Research suggests that over 70% of tradespeople suffer from mental ill health, with many turning to alcohol and drugs to cope.

The increase in National Insurance contributions could push even more trade businesses into ‘financial distress’ claims an insolvency expert from Shakespeare Martineau.

The increase in national living wage to £12.21 an hour will also impact many businesses in the construction sector.

Andy Taylor, partner and head of restructuring at Shakespeare Martineau warned that: “Many companies are already operating on razor-thin margins, and the increased national insurance contributions… will strain cash flows even further.”

And finally, an 18-year-old plasterer who went off site for lunch ended up meeting David Beckham in the local chippy.

Coby Hanson ended up chatting with the football legend while they both waited for their food.

He told his local newspaper that Beckham even asked for the office number because he was thinking of getting an extension on his home.
