AUDIO NEWS: Number of women entering the trades drops and the most popular day for a boiler breakdown

Posted: Wednesday, November 20th, 2024

The number of women joining the construction trades has fallen in the last year – that’s according to government data.

A yawning gender pay gap, basic maternity pay and poor workwear were blamed for the declining number of females entering the trades.

A second report by MyWorkwear, claims the electrical and plumbing professions had a huge 43% pay gap between men and women.

The same study found that many women working as plumbers and electricians only had access to statutory maternity pay, which many said was an “unliveable’ income.

A study out this week estimates that 85% of tradespeople have little or no idea how to use social media to promote their business.

The report from Ironmongery Direct also claims that carpenters and joiners were the least likely trade to get new business via their social media.

Despite this, nearly half of the survey respondents said that social media helped them win work.

Facebook emerged as the most popular platform, with the ability to interact with community groups seen as a key feature.

One in six tradespeople said that social media was as important to their business as word-of-mouth marketing.
