New orders for private house building jumped by 24% in the last three months of the year, as developers green light previously stalled projects. The government figures also showed a 15% increase in commercial property orders, compared to the previous year. However, new infrastructure work fell dampening overall market performance. Construction output increased by just 0.4% in 2024. Clive Docwra, managing director of property and construction consultancy McBains, told The Construction Enquirer that falling interest rates and planning reforms will “hopefully inject new momentum into the house building sector”. --- The construction sector has one of the longest payment cycles among UK industries, with firms getting paid on an average in 33 days. Joe Phelan, from Money.co.uk which compiled the research said while late payment was an inevitable part of running a business, there were ways to “mitigate the impact.” --- A former electrician is coming off the tools and heading to the classroom. Dave Love, who ran his own electrical firm for over 10 years, has been appointed as assistant director of apprenticeships at the Warrington & Vale Royal College.
