AUDIO NEWS: Increase in NI payments could be too much for small builders and plumber wins £90k

Posted: Wednesday, October 30th, 2024

Small builders and tradespeople may not be able to shoulder the burden of additional business costs delivered in yesterday’s budget.

As widely expected, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves increased employer contributions to National Insurance by an additional 1.2%.

There was also a 6.7% increase to the national minimum wage.

Speaking ahead of the budget, Brian Berry, CEO of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), warned that any increase in National Insurance contributions “would hinder small building companies from growing, especially if this is coupled with wage rises”.

The government has announced plans to invest nearly £6 million to develop heat networks in cities across England.

The Department of Energy Security & Net Zero will develop networks in Leeds, Bristol, Stockport, Sheffield and in two areas of London.

The pilot scheme will create “tens of thousands” of jobs in engineering, planning, manufacturing and construction.

Heat networks connect large buildings, like offices, hospitals or hotels to an off-site, typically unconventional heating source, such as data centres or other industrial facilities.

Livvi appeared on Saturday’s episode of The Wheel, where she cleared the last three categories and then went on to successfully answer the final brain teaser.
