AUDIO NEWS: HSE plans clamp down on wood dust and tradespeople's pay goes up over 5%

Posted: Tuesday, June 13th, 2023

The Health & Safety Executive is targeting woodworking businesses this summer, as it looks to crack down on respiratory risks from wood dust.

HSE inspectors will be visiting sites and checking that employers have taken effective control measures, and that workers understand the risks involved.

Wood dust exposure is linked to sino-nasal cancer, occupational asthma and dermatitis.

HSE found that 78% of businesses were not compliant in protecting workers from respiratory sensitisers in 2023/23.

Average weekly earnings for tradespeople have gone up by over 5% in the last year – that’s according to data from payroll firm Hudson Contract.

On average pay was slightly down between April and March of this year, due to the number of bank holidays.

But pay in the trades has held up well during the cost-of-living crisis.

Ian Anfield, managing director of Hudson Contract said, “in the public sector and unionised employment, employees are… being offered 5%... freelancers in construction have already had the benefit of year-on-year increases and 5.4% in the last year alone.”
