AUDIO NEWS: Homeowners cut back on repair work and more mental health support needed

Posted: Tuesday, October 15th, 2024

Homeowners are cutting back on repair and maintenance work in the face of ongoing economic uncertainty, claims the Federation of Master Builders.

Government figures released last week indicate there was a 1% drop in repair, maintenance and improvement work in August.

Brian Berry, chief executive of the trade body said that homeowners were tightening the purse strings “against a backdrop of rising costs and economic uncertainty ahead of the October budget.”

Berry went on to urge the government to provide more details about its plan to retrofit five million homes.

Construction workers and tradespeople need greater accessibility to mental health services and support, said Band of Builders CEO, Gavin Crane.

Speaking at the launch of its annual Big Brew campaign, Crane went on to say that recent events such as the collapse of major contractors, had escalated the mental health crisis to “unprecedented levels”.

Held throughout October, Big Brew events encourage tradespeople to come together and share their experiences over a cuppa.

Charlie, who was diagnosed with autism aged three, often visits special educational needs schools and gives motivational talks about his experience.
