AUDIO NEWS: Government admits it will miss housing target and tradespeople willing to travel further for work

The government had admitted it’s likely to miss its house building target.

Labour had committed to building 1.5 million homes over the next five years. But government data released as part of this week’s Spring budget statement, forecasted only 1.3 million new homes will be built. 

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the figure was within “touching distance” of its initial target.

Despite the slip in housing figures, Reeves committed to an additional £13 billion  to support spending on infrastructure, housing and defence.

Faced with more local competition nearly two thirds of tradespeople are now prepared to travel further for work – that’s according to a report from Tempcover.

The poll of 500 tradies found that on average they were willing to travel for an additional 31 miles to find work.

Higher pay, more opportunities and a desire to grow the client base were the top three reasons for expanding the range of their business.

Nearly 70% of the tradespeople polled also said they expected to travel further in the next five years.

Nearly a third of tradespeople are considering leaving the industry due to mental health issues, claims a survey by Arco.

In the research. 25% of respondents reported mental health challenges linked to their work.

Those working as window fabricators, bricklayers and building surveyors were the most likely to be seeking a career switch.
