AUDIO NEWS: Former-football launches mental health charity and pay becomes biggest construction cost

Former England and Everton footballer, Trevor Steven is spearheading a charity encouraging construction workers to talk about their mental health. 

The initiative launched last week has been endorsed by football legends Gary Linker, Robbie Fowler, Stuart Pearce, Ally McCoist, Peter Reid and Viv Anderson.

As part of the programme current and former footballers will go on-site to deliver mental health awareness sessions, encourage conversation and recruit volunteers to train as mental health first aiders. 

Research conducted by Trevor Steven in partnership with Causeway Technologies estimated that over half of construction site workers are either currently suffering from or have had mental health problems.

Pay is replacing materials as the biggest driver of construction cost inflation, claims a report from Turner & Townsend.

The report urged builders to focus on workforce retention and retraining in a bid to control cost. 

The consultants expect tender price inflation across the industry to remain stubbornly high despite an easing on material price inflation.
