The fake battens, which are being marked as BS-5534 compliant, are becoming an increasingly serious issue for merchants, roofing contractors and clients, warned the trade body.

Using non-compliant battens could lead to significant health and safety risks and may result in the contractor having to strip and re-roof a property.

An electrician who walked off a job in Dublin after his pay was docked has won a €6,000 payout from a workplace tribunal.

Ian Church was working on the national children’s hospital for HPL Services when his hourly rate was cut by €7 and his supervisor told him he could be replaced by an apprentice.

The dispute started when Church took a week-off after his mother-in-law passed away. His employers claimed he hadn’t informed them of his plans and used it as a pretext to dock his pay.

John lived in the house with his aunt Mimi and her husband George Smith until he was 22, and served as a practice venue for the Beatles.
