AUDIO NEWS: Fair Payment Code launched and FMB warns government over skills crisis

Posted: Friday, December 6th, 2024

A new Fair Payment Code was launched earlier this week that aims to highlight the industry’s best payers.

The system, which is overseen by the Small Business Commissioner Liz Barclay, introduces gold, silver and bronze badges to reward best practices and help smaller firms identify reliable payers.

Liz Barclay said the code was a response to suppliers who demanded a “more aspirational, robust and ambitious approach to changing the business-to-business payment culture in the UK.”

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) praised Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s re-commitment to building 1.5 million homes over the next five years.

However, the trade body warned the housing target was not viable without “significant steps to tackle the ongoing construction skills crisis”, and to diversify the housing market from a small number of volume housebuilders.

Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB said: “The challenge the UK faces in tackling the housing crisis is immense.”

And finally, Band of Builders completed redecoration work on the home of Simon Taylor this month.

Taylor, a former landscaper, was unable to complete the work himself after losing sight in his right eye and visual acuity dropped to 30% in his left eye.

Over 3 days a team of volunteers prepared and painted the hall, stairs and landing, and fitted new doors in the upstairs rooms.
