AUDIO NEWS: Ex-Liverpool major charged with bribery and calls for gas safety checks to be upgraded

Twelve people, including the former Liverpool mayor, have been charged with bribery and misconduct offences after an investigation into the award of building contracts. 

Also charged alongside Ex-Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson, was the former assistant director of highways and planning, Andrew Barr and Nick Kavanagh the ex-head of regeneration.

Julian and Paul Flanagan, directors of local contractor, Flanagan Group were also charged. 

The long running Police investigation focused on awarding of commercial and business contracts between 2010 and 2020.

The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council and the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EAU) want mandatory gas safety checks at rented homes to include testing of all gas appliances and efficiency checks on the heating system.

The trade bodies argue that the proposals will benefit the landlord and tenant, and can be rolled out immediately.

Mike Foster, CEO of the EUA said the upgrade of the gas safety check to a system and appliance service could save tenants money and help landlords plan for the future.

A scheme to complete the infilling on an old Victorian tunnel in Pendlebury, Great Manchester was finished this month, nearly 70 years after work started.

The Clifton Hall tunnel gained notoriety in the 1950s when the collapse of a construction shaft resulted in five fatalities. Four houses in the street above were also lost.
