AUDIO NEWS: Electrotechnical sector faces skills challenge and BUS applications ramp up

Posted: Friday, June 7th, 2024

Half of businesses in the electrotechnical services sector are facing a recruitment challenge – that’s according to a survey of the UK’s engineering services sector.

The quarterly poll, compiled by four trade bodies across the UK also claimed that the slow growth in the sector was partly due to a shortage of skilled workers.

Survey respondents also complained that job applicants lacked the right attitude and had unrealistic salary expectations.

ECA’s COO, Andrew Eldred said that further action at a national and local level was needed to “bring the number of apprentice starts up to a sustainable level.”

Despite a surge in applications for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, official figures indicate the government has a long way to go before reaching its target of 600,000 heat pump installations a year by 2028.

Grants for heat pumps have jumped 50% since October, when the subsidiary was increased to £7,500 pounds. Just in April there was a 93% year-on-year increase in the number of applications.

If the current rate of growth continues, there will be approximately 25,000 BUS applications by the end of the year.
