The latest construction output figures should set alarm bells ringing, warned the Federation of Master Builders. February’s purchasing managers index showed the fastest downturn in construction output since the height of the pandemic. The drop in output combined with rising cost inflation, is likely to knock market confidence further, said FMB chief executive, Brian Berry. Berry urged the government to take urgent action to reassure builders that it is serious about hitting its building targets. --- Scotland’s Net Zero target could come under threat due to the shortage of skilled electricians – that’s according to Alan Wilson, managing director of Select. The trade body’s boss said that training for sparks in Scotland had to be prioritised to counter the shrinking talent pool. Despite the increase in apprentices joining the trade, it is not enough to counter an ageing workforce and a growing number of retirements. Speaking as part of a ECA campaign, Wilson said the industry had to focus on training young people and adult trainees. --- A criminal gang posed as electrical contractors and engaged in utilities work to divert power for their cannabis farms. The crooks set up a company called Elev8 Civils & Utilities, complete with liveried vans.
