Contractors are being urged to hire now before the labour shortage become more acute. Government labour market statistics indicate job vacancies in the construction sector grew nearly 15% year on year and are now 44% higher than before the pandemic. Government stats also suggested that wages in construction grew by 4.2% in the last year. Jon Boys, research lead at cost consultant Core Five, told The Construction Enquirer, that “the labour market is becoming more competitive, and labour will likely be a constraint on activity going forward.” Boys predicted that demand was set to increase and recommended that contractors should hire now, if they could. --- Sussex Police has launched an appeal for information after £20,000 worth of tools were taken from vans in Hailsham. In just one night, thieves struck five vans in the local area taking a wide range of power tools within a short period of time. The police is looking for four suspects, dressed in masks, gloves and dark clothing who were seen loading tools into a black estate car. --- A 27-year-old trainee electrician picked a £1,000 voucher for winning the Scottish Joint Industry Board’s Apprentice of the Year.
