AUDIO NEWS: Construction output drops to a six month low, and bad weather adds to roofers woes

Posted: Wednesday, January 8th, 2025

Construction output dropped to a six-month low in December – that’s according to S&P Global's Purchasing Managers Index (PMI).

Despite the two point drop from November, the index still posted a solid upturn in overall construction output.

Commercial work was the fastest growing sector, followed by civil engineering.

Residential work was the only category to register an overall decline in December.

Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence said December’s figures “highlighted a loss of momentum… for construction output growth”.

A survey by the manufacturer said that 60% of roofers were seeing work overrun and over half reported projects going over budget.

53% of respondents also said there was an increase in customer dissatisfaction due to delays and higher costs.

Marley revealed the data while launching its Winter Safety Campaign.

Contractors are cutting corners on PPE to save money, warned the British Safety Industry Federation, this week.

A recent survey by the safety body revealed a worrying-trend of worn out and ineffective PPE still being used on site.

Some of the most common issues flagged by the report include continued use of damaged helmets, dirty hi-vis clothing, ripped safety clothing and expired respiratory gear.

One of the biggest issues revealed was a focus on cost over compliance.
