AUDIO NEWS: Chippies are missing out on work and government plans a crack down on illegal workers

Carpenters looking for domestic repair work are missing job opportunities by failing to market their services online, claims a report by JL Creative.

The digital agency’s research indicated that ‘carpenters near me’ was one of the most widely searched trade-related terms, with the least amount of online advertising.

As a result, clicks for ‘carpenter near me’ cost just over £1.

In comparison, clicks for solar panel installers cost nearly £10.

Jonny Lawrence, director at JL Creative said that emerging trades “seem to be making the most investment in digital advertising, but that does not necessarily translate into search volume.”

The government is planning to introduce ‘right to work’ checks on self-employed tradespeople working on site, as part of a fresh crackdown on illegal migrant workers and rogue employers.

Builders failing to carry out the checks could face hefty penalties if they hire illegal workers, including fines of up to £60,000 a worker, business closures and even prison sentences.

Currently, contractors are only obliged to check the ‘right to work’ status of employees.
