AUDIO NEWS: Carpenters top list of trade earners, and government drops plan to scrap CE mark

Carpenters are the best-paid trade in the UK, according to a report from Trade Fix Direct

The research from the builder’s merchant claims the average national salary for a chippie is £45,500 a year.

Gas engineers were second on the list with a national average salary of £29 grand.

Plasterers sat at the bottom of the list, with the lowest average salary. 

The report also uncovered wild variations in salaries across trades in different parts of the country. 

Roofers’ had the biggest variations in salary, with a regional average of £56 grand in Lincoln, but dropping down to just £16,000 a year in Lancaster.

The government has abandoned plans to scrap the European CE product mark, next year.

Building safety minister Rushanara Ali told parliament this week that any attempt to switch all manufactured products over would only be introduced with a two-year notice period.

The latest delay had been prompted by a lack of capacity at approved testing bodies to handle expected demand from manufacturers.

An anonymous builder has been called a superhero by a Derbyshire mum after donating soft play equipment for her severely epileptic son. 

Claire Watkinson had wanted to create a soft play area at home for her son, but thought it was out of a price range, until a builder donated some equipment he’d removed from a nursery in Nottingham.
