AUDIO NEWS: Builders using double cab pickups face tax hike and government wants cladding issues fixed by 2029

Posted: Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024

Builders and tradespeople using double cab pickups as essential work vehicles will be subject to higher tax under new rules introduced in the Autumn Budget.

From April next year, double cab pickups will be reclassified as company cars, increasing the tax burden by as much as 211%, claims the Countryside Alliance.

Chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, Tim Bonner, told the Sun that Rachel Reeves’ pickup truck tax will hammer thousands of working people, “from farmers to plumbers and builders, the twin cab pickup has become the country’s favourite workhorse.”

The government wants all cladding issues on buildings over 18 metres fixed by 2029.

Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has given building owners until 2027 to start recladding work.

The instructions were part of the post-Grenfell, Remediation Acceleration Plan issued earlier this week.

The plan also included measures to address the fire safety of buildings over 11 metres.

And finally, an electrician from South London has started a festive side-hustle, hanging customers’ outside Christmas lights.

28-year-old Josh Thornton told his local paper that families don’t want their ‘dads going on the roof’ in case something happens to them.

Thornton, who hangs lights before and after work and at weekends, said that his calendar was filling up fast, but promised to make time for families in the run up to Christmas.
