Builders are still struggling to get planning permission for smaller developments – that’s according to the Federation of Master Builders. Government stats released last week indicate that planning permission reached a record low in 2024. Amid the disappointing numbers was a steep drop in planning permissions for small sites of 9 units or fewer. Brian Berry, chief executive of the trade body said it was deeply disappointing to see the number of planning for small developers was significantly down on 2023. --- The Material Supply Group warned that the cost of construction products will rise by as much as 8% this year. Exact price increases will depend on the product type, but energy-intensive materials are likely to see the biggest increase. There is also a lot of uncertainty about the price of steel as negotiations continue on UK-American tariffs. --- The government has unveiled a £200 million plan to install solar panels on English schools and hospitals. The initial project from Great British Energy will see 200 schools and 200 NHS sites, fitting with panels. The first panels are expected to be in place by the end of summer. It’s been estimated the project will offer savings for schools and the NHS of up to £400 million over the next 30 years. Energy secretary Ed Miliband said Great British Energy will save hundreds of millions that can be reinvested in frontline services. --- To listen to the construction news please click below
