AUDIO NEWS: Bricky helps rebuild after riots and 45% of van drivers regularly break speed limits

Posted: Monday, August 5th, 2024

Bricklayer Tony Hill has been called a hero for rebuilding a mosque wall in Southport after it was damaged by far-right protesters last week.

Hill was one of about 100 volunteers that came together to clean up and repair the damage to the mosque, which was attacked by far-right demonstrations, following a deadly knife assault that left three girls dead.

Hill was unfazed by the prospect of further demonstrations in the area, saying if he has to rebuild the wall again, “he will do just that”.

The number of drivers speeding in vans has reached epidemic proportions, according to figures from the Department of Transport.

Figures suggest that 45% of van drivers exceed the speed limit in 30 mile an hour zones.

The situation on motorways is slightly worse, with 47% of van drivers breaking the 70 mile an hour limit, and 10% going over 80 miles an hour.

Greg Ford, from Red Corporate Driver Training said the instances of speeding vans were “remarkably, worryingly, consistent across all road types”.

Ben Brindley, a joiner who earlier this year climbed Mount Snowden with his wheelbarrow, finished his biggest challenge yet at the end of July.

For over 40 hours, Brindley pushed his wheelbarrow up and down Chapel-en-le-Frith, 57 times – the equivalent distance to climbing Mount Everest – to raise awareness for mental health in the trades.
