AUDIO NEWS: Apprentice numbers need to triple says CITB and earnings for tradespeople went up in January

Posted: Monday, February 17th, 2025

Apprentice numbers need to triple if the industry is to plug the labour gap – that’s according to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

The training body estimates that another 251,000 workers are needed by 2028 to meet industry demand.

Currently there are 82,000 construction apprentices enrolled across Great Britain.

But businesses’ need to do more, said CITB in a report out last week.

Just 21% of building firms have apprentices, and only 10% employ more than one.

The report recommended more targeted support and incentives for employers.

The government has announced plans to improve energy efficiency in the private rental sector, with the aim to get up to half a million homes out of fuel poverty by 2030.

Under plans, landlords will be required to upgrade their properties to a minimum EPC C rating by the end of the decade.

According to the government, nearly half of all private rentals have an EPC C standard, but this good practice needs to be extended across the sector.

Average weekly earnings in January for self-employed tradespeople were up 8.6% on last year, claimed data from payroll firm, Hudson Contract.

Due to seasonal work patterns January’s figures were over 7% down the previous month.

Earnings slowdown varied significantly depending on the trade — surfacing contractors and bricklayers saw the biggest drop in earnings due largely to the poor weather.
