AUDIO NEWS: 95% of tradespeople get injured at work and Screwfix Foundation raises £15 million for local charities

Posted: Tuesday, January 14th, 2025

Nearly 100% of tradespeople have picked up injuries at work, prompting calls to improve health and safety.

In the survey by Direct Line Business Insurance half of respondents admitted that health and safety requirements were not consistently followed on site.

The poll also found that over a quarter of injured tradespeople took over six months or longer off work to recover.

Figures from HSE indicate there were 47,000 non-fatal workplace injuries in the construction industry between 2021 and 2024.

The sector averaged one fatality a week between 2023 and 2024.

Launched in 2013, the foundation provides grants to repair, maintain and improve community facilities, homes and other buildings used by those in need.

The charity has helped over 3,000 local projects ranging from mental health charities, youth centres, hospices and schools.

Claire Flory, The Screwfix Foundation manager said: “Everyone has played a part in helping improve the lives of people in our communities. Together, we are making a difference.”

And finally, a retired plumber from Norwich is to hold his first art exhibition.

Bernard ‘BJ’ Dennis, now 84-years-old, started painting when he came off the tools.

The exhibition, which takes place in First Draft Bar & Kitchen in Norwich this weekend, will also raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
